TheAmericanDreamisthefaithheldbymanyintheUnitedStatesofAmericathatthoughhardwork,courage,anddeterminationonecanachieveabetterlifeforoneself,usuallythroughfinancialprosperity.ThesewerevaluesheldbymanyearlyEuropeansettlers,andhavebeenpassedontosubsequentgenerations.NowadaystheAmericanDreamhasledtoanemphasisonmaterialwealthasameasureofsuccessand/orhappiness.AmericanDreamalsoreferstothedreamofmaterialsuccess,inwhichone,regardlessofsocialstatus,acquireswealthandgainssuccessbyworkinghardandgoodluck.Thenovelisremarkableforitsevocationofanatmosphereofconflictandparadox.Thepartyiscrowdedandyetempty.Thenightisbeautifulbutgarish.ThescenenotonlyepitomizestheJazzAge,itssuperficialityandtawdrinessanditsequallypowerfulsweetnessandcharm,butalsorepresentstheautho'srmajortheme:
