OnedayinJanuary1913.G.H.Hardy,afamousCambridgeUniversitymathematicianreceivedaletterfromanIndiannamedSrinivasaRamanujanaskinghimforhisopinionof120mathematicaltheorems(定理)thatRamanujansaidhehaddiscovered.ToHardy,manyofthetheoremsmadenosense.Oftheothers,oneortwowerealreadywell-known.Ramanujanmustbesomekindoftrickplayer,Hardydecided,andputtheletteraside.ButallthatdaytheletterkepthangingroundHardy.Mighttherebesomethinginthosewild-lookingtheorems?
ThateveningHardyinvitedanotherbrilliantCambridgemathematician,J.E.Littlewood,andthetwomensetouttoassesstheIndian’sworth.Thatincidentwasaturningpointinthehistoryofmathematics.
Atthetime,RamanujanwasanobscureMadrasPortTrustclerk.Alittlemorethanayearlater,hewasatCambridgeUniversity,andbeginningtoberecognizedasoneofthemostamazingmathematicianstheworldhaseverknown.Thoughhediedin1920,muchofhisworkwassofarinadvanceofhistimethatonlyinrecentyearsisitbeginningtobeproperlyunderstood.
Indeed,hisresultsarehelpingsolvetoday’sproblemsincomputerscienceandphysics,problemsthathecouldhavehadnonotionof.
ForIndians,moreover,Ramanujanhasaspecialsignificance.Ramanujan,thoughborninpoorandill-paidaccountant’sfamily100yearsago,hasinspiredmanyIndianstoadoptmathematicsascareer.
