Anyway,PresidentSaloveyandfacultymembers,parents,siblingswhocamehereunderthefalseimpressiontherewouldbefreefood(laughter);HandsomeDan,whereveryouare,probablyatsomefirehydrantsomewhere(laughter);membersofthe2019NCAAchampionmen’sicehockeyteam(cheersandapplause);distinguishedguestsandgraduates,graduatesoftheClassof2019,Ireallyamprivilegedtobeabletobehereandsharethecelebrationofthisdaywithyou,especially48yearsafterstandinguprighthereasaveryintimidatedseniorwonderingwhatIwasgoingtosay.

Itreallyisaprivilegeformetosharethiscelebrationwithyou,thoughI’mforewarnedthatnoonerememberswhodeliverstheirgraduationspeech.AllIreallyrememberaboutourspeakerin1966isthathewaseloquent,insightful,reallygoodlooking.(Laughter.)Anyway,onethingIpromiseyou,onethingIpromiseyou:

Sorightafterwegraduated,TimeMagazinecameoutwithitsfamous“ManoftheYear”issue.Butfor1966,Timedidn’tpickonemanoronewoman.Theypickedourentiregeneration.
AndTimeexpressedalotofhighhopesforus.Itnotonlypredictedthatwe’dcurethecommoncold,butthatwe’dcurecancer,too.Itpredictedthatwe’dbuildsmog-freecitiesandthatwe’dendpovertyandwaronceandforall.Iknowwhatyou’rethinking–wereallycrushedit.(Laughter.)

Didmygenerationgetlost?
Well,that’sactuallyaconversationforanothertime.Butletmeputonetheorytorest:
It’snottruethateveryoneinmygenerationexperimentedwithdrugs.AlthoughbetweenFlomax,LipitorandViagra,nowwedo.(Laughterandapplause.)
Now,Ididhavesomeprettycreativeclassmatesbackthen.Oneofmygoodfriends,veryclosefriendsinJE–(cheers)–I’mgoingtosetitrightforyouguysrightnow.(Laughter.)OneofmygoodfriendsinJEhadatleasttwohair-brainedideas.Thefirstwasalittlestart-upbuiltonthenotionthatifpeoplehadachoice,they’dpayalittlemoretomailapackageandhaveitarrivetheverynextday.Crazy,right?

Now,hisothernuttyideawastorestartsomethingcalledtheYaleFlyingClub.Andadmittedly,thiswasmoreofaschemetogetusoutofclassandoffthecampus.SoIbasicallyspentmysenioryearmajoringinflying,practicingtake-offsandlandingsoutatTweedAirport.Responsible?
No.ButIwouldn’thavemissedit.
AndoneofthebestlessonsIlearnedhereisthatMarkTwainwasabsolutelyright:
Neverletschoolgetinthewayofaneducation.
Now,Ididn’tknowitatthetime,butYalealsotaughtmetofinishwhatyoustart.Andthat’sonethingthatclearlyseparatesusfromHarvard.(Laughter.)Afterall,alotofthoseguysdon’tevengraduate.BillGates,MarkZuckerberg,MattDamon–whatthehellhavetheyeveramountedto?

ForallIeverlearnedatYale,IhavetotellyoutruthfullythebestpieceofadviceIevergotwasactuallyonewordfrommy89-year-oldmother.I’llneverforgetsittingbyherbedsideandtellingherIhaddecidedtorunforPresident.Andshesqueezedmyhandandshesaid:
“Integrity,John.Integrity.Justrememberalways,integrity.”Andmaybethattellsyoualotaboutwhatshethoughtaboutpolitics.
Butyoushouldknow:
Inacomplicatedworldfullofcomplicateddecisionsandclosecallsthatcouldgoeitherway,whatkeepsyouawakeatnightisn’tsomuchwhetherornotyougotthedecisionrightorwrong.It’swhetheryoumadeyourdecisionfortherightreasons:
Integrity.
AndthesinglebestpieceofadviceIeverreceivedaboutdiplomacydidn’tcomefrommyinternationalrelationsclass,butitcamefrommyfather,whoservedintheForeignService.Hetoldmethatdiplomacywasreallyaboutbeingabletoseetheworldthroughtheeyesofsomeoneelse,tounderstandtheiraspirationsandassumptions.
Andperhapsthat’sjustanotherwordforempathy.Butwhateveritis,IwilltellyousittinghereononeofthemostgorgeousafternoonsinNewHavenasyougraduate:
Listeningmakesadifference,notjustinforeignministriesbutonthestreetsandinthesouksandonthesocialmedianetworktheworldover.
SoClassof2019,ascornyasitmaysound,rememberthatyourparentsaren’tjustheretodayasspectators.They’realsohereasteachers–andevenifcounter-intuitive,it’snotabadideatostayenrolledintheircourseaslongasyoucan.
Nowformypart,IamgratefultoYalebecauseIdidlearnalothereinallofthewaysthatagreatuniversitycanteach.Butthereisonephrasefromoneclassaboveallthatforsomereasonwasindeliblystampedintomyconsciousness.Perhapsit’sbecauseIspentalmost30yearsintheUnitedStatesSenateseeingitappliedagainandagain.
OnemorningintheLawSchoolAuditorium,myProfessor,JohnMortonBlum,saidsimply:
“Allpoliticsisareactiontofeltneeds.”WhatIthoughthemeantisthatthingsonlygetdoneinpubliclifewhenthepeoplewhowantsomethingdemandnothinglessandthepeoplewhomakeithappendecidethttheycandonothingless.
Those“feltneeds”havedriveneverymovementanddecisionthatI’vewitnessedinpoliticssince–fromSouthAfricaacoupleofdecadesagototheArabSpringafewyearsagotoourowncommunities,wheresame-sexcouplesrefusetobetoldbytheirgovernmentwhotheycanlove.
In1963,IrememberwalkingoutofDwightHalloneeveningafteranactivistnamedAllardLowensteingavetheimpassionedandeloquentpleathatIhadeverheard.Hecompelledustofeeltheneedtoengageinthestruggleforcivilrightsrighthereinourowncountry.
Andthat’swhy,juststepsfromhere,rightoverthereonHighStreet,welinedupbusesthatdrovestudentsfromYaleandelsewheresouthtobepartoftheMississippiVoterRegistrationDriveandhelpbreakthebackofJimCrow.UltimatelyweforcedWashingtontoensurethroughthelawthatourvalueswerenotmerewords.WesawCongressrespondtothis“feltneed”andpasstheCivilRightsActandtheVotingRightsAct,andlifeinAmericadidchange.
Notonlydidlandmarkcivilrightsadvancesgrowoutofthesit-insandmarches,butwesawtheEPAandtheCleanWaterActandtheCleanAirActandtheSafeDrinkingWaterActandallofit
