IalsowanttothankallthefolksfromtheUniversityofNewOrleansforhostingusheretoday.AndIknowthey’rehostingthefolksatSouthernUniversityatNewOrleansfortheircommencementlaterontodayaswell,sowewishthemawonderfulday.Andthankyouforhavingus.(Applause.)
Andofcourse,I’vegottogiveabigshout-outtoallthefamilymembersinthecrowd,allofthefamilymembers--(applause)--especiallytothemothers,becauseitisthedaybeforeMother’sDay.Toallthemothers,HappyMother’sDay.(Applause.)
Now,graduates,youallhandledyourbusiness,right?
Justbecauseyouweregraduatingdidn’tmeanyou--comeon,now.(Laughter.)Okay,well,ifyoudidn’t,youhavemypermissiontogetupandgorightnow,becausethereisnothingmoreimportant--no,no,don’tgetup.(Laughter.)Yourmotherswouldkillyouifyougotupatthismoment.(Laughter.)Sojuststayinyourseats,andwhenthisisallovermakesureyoutakecareofmom.
Butinallseriousness,toallthemomsoutthere--aswellasthedadsandthegrandparents,theuncles,theaunts,thebrothers,thesisters,allofyouwhohavehelpedraisethesegraduates--youhaveseenthemthroughtheirupsanddowns,andyouhavepouredyourheartsandsoulsintothesemenandwomen.Sotodayisyourday,too,andyoushouldbeveryproud.Youreallyshould.(Applause.)
Andfinally,mostofall,IwanttocongratulatethebeautifulandhandsomemenandwomenoftheDillardUniversityClassof2014.Yay!
(Applause.)Youallhavecomesofar,Iknow,tomakeittothisday--fromallthoseearlydayswhenthegirlsweresneakingoutofWilliamsHalltogoseetheboysoverattheDuals--ohyeah,Ididmyresearch--(laughter)--toallthosetestsyoucrammedfor,totheplansyou’remakingnowforyourcareers,togoontograduateschool.
Youallhaveseensomuch.You’vewitnessedthisschool’srebirthafterthedevastationofHurricaneKatrina--thenewbuildingsthatreplacedtheonesyoulost,theclassroomsthatstartedfillingbackupagain,theserviceprojectsthatyouallhavedonetohelpthiscommunitybounceback.AndIknowalongthewaythateachofyouhaswrittenyourownstoryofresilienceanddeterminationtomakeitheretothisday.
Forexample,asyouheard,Nicolewastoldbackinhighschoolthatshejustwasn’tcollegematerial.Butnowsheisyourclasspresident,andshe’sheadedofftoYaleforhergraduatedegree.Sothere.(Applause.)That’sit.
AndIknowthatsomeofyoumaycomefromtoughneighborhoods;someofyoumayhavelostyourhomesduringKatrina.Maybeyou’relikeDeShawnDabney,agraduatewhowasraisedbyhisgrandmother--(applause)--maybe--that’syourgrandmother,isn’tit,DeShawn?
(Laughter.)Raisedbyhisgrandmotherwhilesomeofhisfamilymembersweredealingwithissues.Maybejustlikehim,you’vebeenworkingpart-timejobssinceyouwereateenagertomakeyourdreamofgoingtocollegecometrue.Andnow,today,you’reallherereadytowalkacrossthisstageandgetthatdiploma.
Andnomatterwhatpathyoutooktogethere,youallkeptyourheartssetonthisday.Youfoughtthrougheverychallengeyouencountered,andyouearnedthatdegreefromthisfineuniversity.Andindoingso,youarefollowinginthefootstepsofallthosewhocamebeforeyou,andyouhavebecomeanindeliblepartofthehistoryofthisschool--ahistorythat,asyouallknow,stretchesbacktowellbeforetheCivilWar,backto1826,theyearachildnamedEmperorWilliamswasborn.
Now,Emperorwasbornintoslavery.Butashegrewup,hemanagedtoteachhimselftoreadandwritewellenoughtocreateapassthatallowedhimtocomeandgoaroundthecitywithoutgettinghassled.Butoneday,hismastersawthepassandhesaid,wheredidyoulearntowritelikethat?
Now,justimaginethefearEmperormusthavefeltwhenheheardthatquestion--becauseremember,backthenitwasillegalforaslavetolearntoreadorwrite.Sowhoknowswhatkindofpunishmenthemayhavegotten--abeating,awhipping,evenworse.
Wedon’texactlyknowwhathappenedonthatday,butwedoknowthatwhenEmperorturned32,aftermorethanthreedecadesinbondage,hebecameafreeman.HedecidedtostayinNewOrleans,andhewentontobecomeaminister--evenfoundedachurchrighthereintown.Andin1869,whenabolitionists,missionaries,blackfolksandwhitefolkscametogethertocreateaschoolforfreedslaveshereinNewOrleans,Emperorwasoneoftheoriginalsignersofthecharter.
TheydecidedtonametheschoolNewOrleansUniversity,becauseeventhoughmostoftheclasseswouldbetaughtatahighschoollevelorbelow,oh,theiraspirationsweremuchhigherthanthat.Andwhentheylaidthecornerstoneforthatuniversity’sfirstbuildingdownonSt.CharlesAvenue,Emperorgotachancetospeak.
Hesaid--andthesearehiswords--hesaid,“FortwentyyearsIwasaslaveonthesestreets.ItwasapenitentiaryoffensetoeducateaNegro.Ihaveseenmyfellow-servantswhippedfortryingtolearn;buttodayhereIam[amI],speakingwhereabuildingistobeerectedfortheeducationofthechildrenofmypeople.”Hegoesontosay,“IwonderifthisistheworldIwasbornin.”
See,inthecourseofhisshortlifetime,Emperorsaweducationgofrombeingacrimeforblackfolkstobeingarealpossibilityforhiskidsandgrandkids.Sonowonderhewasaskingwhetherthiswasthesameworldhe’dbeenborninto.See,foramanlikeEmperor,gettinganeducationcouldopenupawholenewworldofopportunity.Aneducationmeanthavingrealpower.Itmeantyoucouldmanageyourownmoney.Itmeantyoucouldn’tgetswindledoutoflandorpossessionswhensomebodytoldyoutojustsignonthedottedline;sometimesevendeterminedwhetherornotyoucouldvote.
Somostfolksbackthensaweducationasthekeytorealandlastingfreedom.That’swhy,whenNewOrleansUniversityandtheotherAfricanAmericancollegeintown,StraightUniversity,firstopenedtheirdoors,oneofthebiggestproblemstheyfacedwastoomanystudents.That’sright--toomanystudents.ManyofthesestudentsbarelyspokeEnglish;they’dgrownupspeakingCreoleorFrench.FewhadeverseentheinsideofaclassroomorevenbeentaughttheirABCs.
Butletmetellyou,thosestudentswerehungry--youhearme?
Hungry.Theystudiedliketheirlivesdependedonit.Theyblazedthroughtheirlessons.AndthathungerforeducationlastedforgenerationsintheAfricanAmericancommunityhereinNewOrleans.
Whenanarsonistsetfiretotheschool’slibraryin1877,theybuiltanewone.Whenthosetwooriginalschoolsranintofinancialtroublesyearslater,theystartedmakingplanstobuildanevenbiggerandbetteruniversity.Andinthe1930s,whenwhitefolkscomplainedthatthisnewschoolwouldmeantoomanyblackstudentsontheirbuses,thefolksattheschoolgotthecitytoaddabuslinejustfortheirstudents,becausenothing--nothing--wasgoingtostopthemfromachievingthevisionofthoseearlyfounders.(Applause.)
Andfinally,inMayof1934,theybrokegroundforthisschool,DillardUniversity--(applause)--auniversitythatwouldgoontoproducesomeoftheleadingthinkersandachieversinourcountry.Andthedaythecornerstonewaslaidforyourlibrary,thePresidentofHowardUniversityspokethesewords:
Hesaid,“ThereliesinthisSouthlandtoday,buriedinunmarkedgraves,manyablackgeniuswhowouldhaveblessedthiscityandthissectionofourcountry,if[only]hisparentscouldhavehadbeforethemtheDillardUniversityyouarenowbuilding.”
Andintheyearssincethen,throughsegregationanddepression,throughthreatsofviolenceandthefloodwatersofadevastatingstorm,studentslikeyouhavecomeheretostudyandtolearn,andtocarryforwardthosehopesanddreams.Andtoday,Istandbeforeaseaofyounggeniuses.Oh,yeah.(Applause.)
So,graduates,Ihopethatyouunderstandthatthisdayisnotjusttheculminationofyourowndreams,buttherealizationofthedreamsofsomanywhocamebeforeyou.Andyoushouldbesoproud,andsohappy,andsoexcitedaboutyourfutures.Butwhatyoushouldn’tbeissatisfied.(Applause.)See,becausewhileitisawonderfulthingthatallofyouareheretoday,wehavetoaskourselves,whataboutallth
