Therewasonceaking'sson,noonehadsomanybeautifulbooksashe.Inthemhecouldreadofeverythingthathadeverhappenedinthisworld,andhecouldseeitallpicturedinfineillustrations.Hecouldfindoutabouteveryraceofpeopleandeverycountry,buttherewasnotasinglewordaboutwheretofindtheGardenofParadise,andthis,justthis,wastheverythingthathethoughtmostabout.
Whenhewasstillveryyoungandwasabouttostarthisschooling,hisgrandmotherhadtoldhimthateachflowerintheGardenofParadisewasmadeofthesweetestcake,andthatthepistilswerebottlesfulloffinestwine.Ononesortofflower,shetold,historywaswritten,onanothergeography,ormultiplicationtables,sothatoneonlyhadtoeatcaketoknowone'slesson,andthemoreoneate,themorehistory,geography,orarithmeticonewouldknow.

Hewentwalkinginthewoodsoneday.Hewalkedalone,forthiswashisfavoriteamusement.Eveningcameon,thecloudsgathered,andtherainpoureddownasiftheskywereallonebigfloodgatefromwhichthewaterplunged.Itwasasdarkasitwouldbeatnightinthedeepestwell.Hekeptslippingonthewetgrass,andtrippingoverthestonesthatstuckoutoftherockysoil.Everythingwassoakingwet,andatlengththepoorPrincedidn'thaveadrystitchtohisback.Hehadtoscrambleovergreatboulderswherethewatertrickledfromthewetmoss.Hehadalmostfainted,whenheheardastrangepuffingandsawahugecaveaheadofhim.Itwasbrightlylit,forinsidethecaveburnedafiresolargethatitcouldhaveroastedastag.Andthiswasactuallybeingdone.Amagnificentdeer,antlersandall,hadbeenstuckonaspit,andwasbeingslowlyturnedbetweentherough-hewntrunksoftwopinetrees.Anelderlywoman,soburlyandstrongthatshemighthavebeentakenforamanindisguise,satbythefireandthrewlogafterloguponit.
"Youcancomenearer,"shesaid."Sitdownbythefireandletyourclothesdry."
"There'sanawfuldrafthere,"thePrinceremarked,asheseatedhimselfontheground.

"Don'tgorightuptothefiresoquickly,"thePrincewarnedhim."Yourfaceandhandsmightgetfrostbite."
