Thesamelethargy,Iamafraid,characterizestheuseofourfacultiesandsenses.Onlythedeafappreciatehearing,
onlytheblindrealizethemanifoldblessingsthatlieinsight.Particularlydoesthisobservationapplytothosewho
havelostsightandhearinginadultlife.Butthosewhohaveneversufferedimpairmentofsightorhearingseldom
makethefullestuseoftheseblessedfaculties.Theireyesandearstakeinallsightsandsoundhazily,without
concentration,andwithlittleappreciation.Itisthesameoldstoryofnotbeinggratefulforwhatwehaveuntilwe

Ihaveoftenthoughtitwouldbeablessingifeachhumanbeingwerestrickenblindanddeafforafewdaysatsome
timeduringhisearlyadultlife.Darknesswouldmakehimmoreappreciativeofsight;silencewouldteachhimthe
joysofsound.
