TobeinNewYorkwithmyfamily,withsomanyfriends,includingmanyNewYorkerswhogavemethehonorofservingthemintheSenateforeightyears.
ToberightacrossthewaterfromtheheadquartersoftheUnitedNations,whereIrepresentedourcountrymanytimes.
TobehereinthisbeautifulparkdedicatedtoFranklinRoosevelt'senduringvisionofAmerica,thenationwewanttobe.
Andinaplace…withabsolutelynoceilings.
Youknow,PresidentRoosevelt'sFourFreedomsareatestamenttoournation'sunmatchedaspirationsandareminderofourunfinishedworkathomeandabroad.Hislegacyliftedupanationandinspiredpresidentswhofollowed.OneisthemanIservedasSecretaryofState,BarackObama,andanotherismyhusband,BillClinton.
TwoDemocratsguidedby–Oh,thatwillmakehimsohappy.TheywereandaretwoDemocratsguidedbythefundamentalAmericanbeliefthatrealandlastingprosperitymustbebuiltbyallandsharedbyall.
PresidentRooseveltcalledoneveryAmericantodohisorherpart,andeveryAmericananswered.Hesaidthere'snomysteryaboutwhatittakestobuildastrongandprosperousAmerica:
"Equalityofopportunity…Jobsforthosewhocanwork…Securityforthosewhoneedit…Theendingofspecialprivilegeforthefew…Thepreservationofcivillibertiesforall…awiderandconstantlyrisingstandardofliving."
Thatstillsoundsgoodtome.
It'sAmerica'sbasicbargain.Ifyoudoyourpart,yououghttobeabletogetahead.Andwheneverybodydoestheirpart,Americagetsaheadtoo.
Thatbargaininspiredgenerationsoffamilies,includingmyown.
It'swhatkeptmygrandfathergoingtoworkinthesameScrantonlacemilleverydayfor50years.
It'swhatledmyfathertobelievethatifhescrimpedandsaved,hissmallbusiness–printingdraperyfabricinChicago–couldprovideuswithamiddle-classlife.Anditdid.
WhenPresidentClintonhonoredthebargain,wehadthelongestpeacetimeexpansioninhistory,abalancedbudget,andforthefirsttimeindecadesweallgrewtogether,withthebottom20percentofworkersincreasingtheirincomesbythesamepercentageasthetop5percent.
WhenPresidentObamahonoredthebargain,wepulledbackfromthebrinkofDepression,savedtheautoindustry,providedhealthcareto16millionworkingpeople,andreplacedthejobswelostfasterthanthehistoricalaverageafterafinancialcrash.
But,it'snotXXXX年,orXXXX年,orevenXXXX年.Wefacenewchallengesinoureconomyandourdemocracy.
We'restillworkingourwaybackfromacrisisthathappenedbecausetime-testedvalueswerereplacedbyfalsepromises.
InsteadofaneconomybuiltbyeveryAmerican,foreveryAmerican,weweretoldthatifweletthoseatthetoppaylowertaxesandbendtherules,theirsuccesswouldtrickledowntoeveryoneelse.
Whathappened?
Well,insteadofabalancedbudgetwithsurplusesthatcouldhaveeventuallypaidoffournationaldebt,theRepublicanstwicecuttaxesforthewealthiest,borrowedmoneyfromothercountriestopayfortwowars,andfamilyincomesdropped.Youknowwhereweendedup.
Exceptitwasn'ttheend.
Aswehavesinceourfounding,Americansmadeanewbeginning.
Youworkedextrashifts,tooksecondjobs,postponedhomerepairs…youfiguredouthowtomakeitwork.Andnowpeoplearebeginningtothinkabouttheirfutureagain–goingtocollege,startingabusiness,buyingahouse,finallybeingabletoputawaysomethingforretirement.
Sowe'restandingagain.But,weallknowwe'renotyetrunningthewayAmericashould.
Youseecorporationsmakingrecordprofits,withCEOsmakingrecordpay,butyourpaycheckshavebarelybudged.
Whilemanyofyouareworkingmultiplejobstomakeendsmeet,youseethetop25hedgefundmanagersmakingmorethanallofAmerica'skindergartenteacherscombined.And,oftenpayingalowertaxrate.
So,youhavetowonder:
"Whendoesmyhardworkpayoff?
Whendoesmyfamilygetahead?
"
"When?
"
Isaynow.
Prosperitycan'tbejustforCEOsandhedgefundmanagers.
Democracycan'tbejustforbillionairesandcorporations.
Prosperityanddemocracyarepartofyourbasicbargaintoo.
Youbroughtourcountryback.
Nowit'stime–yourtimetosecurethegainsandmoveahead.
And,youknowwhat?
Americacan'tsucceedunlessyousucceed.
ThatiswhyIamrunningforPresidentoftheUnitedStates.
Here…here,onRooseveltIsland,Ibelievewehaveacontinuingrendezvouswithdestiny.EachAmericanandthecountrywecherish.
I'mrunningtomakeoureconomyworkforyouandforeveryAmerican.
Forthesuccessfulandthestruggling.
Fortheinnovatorsandinventors.
Forthosebreakingbarriersintechnologyanddiscoveringcuresfordiseases.
Forthefactoryworkersandfoodserverswhostandontheirfeetallday.
Forthenurseswhoworkthenightshift.
Forthetruckerswhodriveforhoursandthefarmerswhofeedus.
Fortheveteranswhoservedourcountry.
Forthesmallbusinessownerswhotookarisk.
Foreveryonewho'severbeenknockeddown,butrefusedtobeknockedout.
I'mnotrunningforsomeAmericans,butforallAmericans.
Ourcountry'schallengesdidn'tbeginwiththeGreatRecessionandtheywon'tendwiththerecovery.
Fordecades,Americanshavebeenbuffetedbypowerfulcurrents.
Advancesintechnologyandtheriseofglobaltradehavecreatedwholenewareasofeconomicactivityandopenednewmarketsforourexports,buttheyhavealsodisplacedjobsandundercutwagesformillionsofAmericans.
Thefinancialindustryandmanymulti-nationalcorporationshavecreatedhugewealthforafewbyfocusingtoomuchonshort-termprofitandtoolittleonlong-termvalue…toomuchoncomplextradingschemesandstockbuybacks,toolittleoninvestmentsinnewbusinesses,jobs,andfaircompensation.
OurpoliticalsystemissoparalyzedbygridlockanddysfunctionthatmostAmericanshavelostconfidencethatanythingcanactuallygetdone.Andthey'velosttrustintheabilityofbothgovernmentandBigBusinesstochangecourse.
Now,wecanblamehistoricforcesbeyondourcontrolforsomeofthis,butthechoiceswe'vemadeasanation,leadersandcitizensalike,havealsoplayedabigrole.
OurnextPresidentmustworkwithCongressandeveryotherwillingpartneracrossourentirecountry.AndIwilldojustthat–toturnthetidesothesecurrentsstartworkingforusmorethanagainstus.
Atourbest,that'swhatAmericansdo.We'reproblemsolvers,notdeniers.Wedon'thidefromchange,weharnessit.
Butwecan'tdothatifwegobacktothetop-downeconomicpoliciesthatfailedusbefore.
Americanshavecometoofartoseeourprogressrippedaway.
Now,theremaybesomenewvoicesinthepresidentialRepublicanchoir,butthey'reallsingingthesameoldsong…
Asongcalled"Yesterday."
Youknowtheone–allourtroubleslookasthoughthey'reheretostay…andweneedaplacetohideaway…Theybelieveinyesterday.
Andyou'reluckyIdidn'ttrysingingthat,too,I'lltellyou!
TheseRepublicanstripoverthemselvespromisinglowertaxesforthewealthyandfewerrulesforthebiggestcorporationswithoutregardforhowthatwillmakeincomeinequalityevenworse.
We'veheardthistunebefore.Andweknowhowitturnsout.
Askmanyofthesecandidatesaboutclimatechange,oneofthedefiningthreatsofourtime,andthey'llsay:
"I'mnotascientist."Well,then,whydon'ttheystartlisteningtothosewhoare?
TheypledgetowipeouttoughrulesonWallStreet,ratherthanreininthebanksthatarestilltoorisky,courtingfuturefailures.Inacasethatcanonlybeconsideredmassamnesia.
Theywanttotakeawayhealthinsurancefrommorethan16millionAmericanswithoutanycrediblealternative.
Theyshameandblamewomen,ratherthanrespectourrighttomakeourownreproductivehealthdecisions.
Theywanttoputimmigrants,whoworkhardandpaytaxes,atriskofdeportation.
Andtheyturntheirbacksongaypeoplewholoveeachother.
Fundamentally,theyrejectwhatittakestobuildaninclusiveeconomy.Ittakesaninclusivesociety.WhatIoncecalled"avillage"thathasaplaceforeveryone.
Now,myvaluesandalifetimeofexperienceshavegivenmeadifferentvisionforAmerica.
Ibelievethatsuccessisn'tmeasuredbyhowmuchthewealthiestAmericanshave,butbyhowmanychildrenclimboutofpoverty…
Howmanystart-upsandsmallbusinessesopenandthrive…
Howmanyyoungpeoplegotocollegewithoutdrowningindebt…
Howmanypeoplefindagoodjob…
Howmanyfamiliesgetaheadandstayahead.
Ididn'tlearnthisfrompolitics.Ilearneditfrommyownfamily.
Mymothertaughtmethateverybodyneedsachanceandachampion.Sheknewwhatitwaslikenottohaveeitherone.
Herownparentsabandonedher,andby14shewasoutonherown,workingasahousemaid.Yearslater,whenIwasoldenoughtounderstand,Iaskedwhatkepthergoing.
Youknowwhatheranswerwas?
Somethingverysimple:
kindnessfromsomeonewhobelievedshemattered.
Thefirstgradeteacherwhosawshehadnothingtoeatatlunchand,withoutembarrassingher,broughtextrafoodtoshare.
Thewomanwhosehouseshecleanedlettinghergotohighschoolsolongasherworkgotdone.Thatwasabargainsheleapttoaccept.
And,becausesomepeoplebelievedinher,shebelievedinme.
That'swhyIbelievewithallmyheartinAmericaandinthepotentialofeveryAmerican.
Tomeeteverychallenge.
Toberesilient…nomatterwhattheworldthrowsatyou.
Tosolvethetoughestproblems.
