Themainideaoflecture1isthebriefintroductionofPositivePsychology,thesyllabus,therequirementsandsomekeynotions.Positivepsychologyisbasedonhumanisticpsychology.Thisclasswillbetaughtontwolevels:
theacademicandapplied.It’simportanttotakeactivenotesandapplythenotionofembracingstillness.Thefirstthingisthisclassisnotjustaboutinformation;it’salsoexplicitlyabouttransformation.Theaimofthisclassistomakecommonsensemorecommon,especiallyintherealwordapplication.Thesecretofhappinessistogetridofthisexcessstone.Thesenseofconfidenceandalwaysaskingquestionsdeterminetheextraordinarysuccess.
1.Theexplicitmandateofpositivepsychologyaswellasofthisclassistocreateabridgebetweenivorytowerandmainstreet(在象牙塔及大众间构建桥梁).Sciencethatworks.

Sowehaveacontainer,whichisourmind.Andinformationisabouttakingdata,takingscience,takinginformationandputtingitinsidetheform.Nowwhenthisformisfilled,that’swhenweareeducated.Moreinformation,moredata,better.Notenough.Becauseit’snotjustinformationthatdeterminesourwellbeing,oursuccess,ourself-esteem,ourmotivationallevelandsoon.It’smuchmorethaninformation.Transformationisabouttakingthisform(shape)andchangingit.
5.Informationinandofitselfisnotenough.Yougoforanathleticmeet.Youraimistogetintothetopthree——tobemedalist.Inotherwords,thesameobjectiveinformationwhichis“Igoteighth;Iexpectedtothree”.Thesameinformationverydifferentinterpretation.Oneisadisaster,theotherinterpretationisanopportunity.

Themainideaoflecture2isthereasonstostudypositivepsychology,thepowerofthequestionandordinarycharacteristicsthatledtoextraordinaryresults.The21ratiomeansthatalittlepeoplestudyaboutpositivethereismoreandmoreunhappiness,whichisaglobalphenomena.Therearethreereasonswhyweneedtofocusonthepositive:
(1)Itisimportanttofocusonwhatworks.
(2)Beinghappyisnotjustthenegationofhappiness.(3)Themosteffectivewayofpreventinghardshipisactuallybyfocusingonandcultivatingthepositive.Optimism,faithandasenseofmeaning,prosaicallybehavior,focusingonadvantages,setgoals,arolemodel,socialsupportareadmitweaknessthe8ordinarycharacteristicsthatledtoextraordinaryresults.TheteachersharehisrolemodelofMarvaCollin,whichencouragedhimtobecomeateacher.WhatMCdoesiscreateaverydifferentmodelthantheconventionalwisdom.

MarvaCollinswasborninAlabamain1930s.HerfatherwasAfricanAmerican;hermother,NativeAmerican.Shewasbornatatimeinaplacewhereagreatdealofdiscriminationwas.Fortunately,forMarva,herfatherreallybelievedinherandsaidtoherfromaveryyoungage,“Marva,youcanmakesomethingofyourlife.Youcanbecomeasecretary”.Sheworkedhardandsucceeded.Shemadeit.Andshebecameasecretary.Afterafewyearsofworkingasasecretary,doingwell.Shedecidedthiswasnotforherandwhathercallinginlife.Herrealpassionwasinteaching.Shewantedtobeaschoolteacher.Shewenttonightschool.Afewyearslater,shegotherteachingcertificate,gotmarriedandwithherhusbandmovedtoChicago.Thereshejoinedthepublicschoolsystemininnercity,Chicago.Therealitythatshefound,thatsheencounteredtherewasarealityofmuchcrime,muchdrugsandmorethananything,hopelessness.Thehopeoftheteacherswastokeepthestudentsinschoolforaslongaspossible.Sothattheydon’tjointhestreetgangsattheageof12;sothattheyareprotectedfromthedrugs,fromcrime.MarvaCollinswalksintothisrealityandsays,“Thingsaregoingtobedifferent.”Onthefirstdayofherclass,shesaidtothestudents,“Wearegoingtodoalotofbelievinginourselves.”Andsherepeatsthismessageoverandoveragain,“Ibelieveinyou.Youcandowell.Youcansucceed.Takeresponsibilityforyourlife.”Sothese“unteachable”onescandoalotofthingsthatbeyondtheirage.Thentherumorcamethatshemustusingforce.AndMChasenoughoftheserumors,leavethepublicschoolsystem,opensupherownschoolinherownkitchenwith4studentsandinitially,twoofthemherownkids.Gradually,moreandmorestudentsjoinherschool.Allthestudentsthatinitiallyjoinedtheschoolarepublicschooldropouts.MCisthelastresortbeforethestreet.Andthemiraclecontinue.EveryoneofMC’sstudentsgraduatesfromelementaryschool.Everyonegoestocollegeandgraduatesfromhighschoolandgraduatesfromcollege.OvernightMCbecomesfamousthroughaprogramonTV.RonaldReagancallsupMCandoffershertohissecretaryofEducation.MCturnshisoffersdownandsays,“Ilovetoteachtoomuch.Myplaceisintheclassroom”.Eightyearslater,GeorgeBushSr.callsMConceagain,offeringhertobehissecretaryofeducation.Onceagain,“Ilovetoteachtoomuch.Myplaceisintheclassroom”.In1995,aphilanthropistdonatestensofmillionsofdollarstoMC.NowthereareMCschoolsalloverthecountrywherethousandsofstudentslearn,wherehundredsofteachersfromallovertheworldcomeandseethemiracleofMC.
