The1820ssawBabbageworkonhis'DifferenceEngine',amachinewhichcouldperformmathematicalcalculations.Atthebeginningasix-wheeledmodelwasconstructed.Hethendevelopedplansforabigger,better,machine-DifferenceEngine2.Healsoworkedonanotherinvention,themorecomplexAnalyticalEngine,onwhichhisfameasacomputerpioneernowlargelyrests.Itwasdesignedtobeabletoperformanyarithmeticalcalculationusingpunched(打孔的)cardsthatwouldtaketheinstructions,aswellasamemoryunittostorenumbersandmanyothermostimportantpartsoftoday'scomputers.ButneithertheAnalyticalEnginenorDifferenceEngine2wasfinishedinBabbage'slifetime.

Severalfactsmakethesechoicesunacceptabletomodemsociety.Thefirstproblemisspace.Dumps,whicharenowcalledlandfills,aremostneededinheavilypopulatedareas.Suchareasrarelyhaveemptylandsuitableforthispurpose.Propertyiseithertooexpensiveortooclosetoresidential(住宅区的)neighborhoods.Long-distancetrashhaulinghasbeenacommonpractice,butoncefarmareasarerefusingtoacceptrubbishfromelsewhere,cheaplandwithintruckingdistanceofmajorcityareasisalmostnonexistent(不存在).
