In1924jazzmusicianandorchestraleaderPaulWhitemandecidedtoorganizeaspecialconcerttoshowthatjazzwasseriousmusic.Gershwinagreedtocomposesomethingfortheconcertbeforeherealizedhehadjustafewweekstodoit.Andinthatshorttime,hecomposedapieceforpianoandorchestrawhichhecalledRhapsodyinBlue.Gershwinhimselfplayedthepianoattheconcert.Theaudiencewerethrilledwhentheyheardhismusic.Itmadehimworld-famousandshowedthatjazzmusiccouldbebothseriousandpopular.In1928,GershwinwenttoParis.Heappliedtostudycompositionwiththewell-knownmusicianNadiaBoulanger,butsherejectedhim.Shewasafraidthatclassicalstudywouldruinhisjazz-influencedstyle.Whilethere,GershwinwroteAnAmericaninParis.Whenitwasfirstperformed,criticsweredividedoverthemusic.Somecalledithappyandfulloflife,toothersitwassillyandboring.ButitquicklybecamepopularinEuropeandtheUnitedStates.Itstillremainsoneofhismostfamousworks.
