PrideandPrejudiceiswell-knownasthemostsuccessfulandpopularmasterpieceoftheauthoressJaneAusten.ItmainlydescribedtheordinarylifeoftheBennetsandtheLucas.Thethemeisnorrow;butsheshowsusabeautifultableauofEnglandpeople'lifeofherowntime.Insomesense,ElizabethandCharlottein thisbookbotharetruereflectionoftheauthoress.Elizabethisanintelligentandvivaciousgirl,whoisself-dignifiedandpronetohastyjudgments.Andatlast,sheconqueresherprejudiceandgetsunionwithDarcy,awealthygentlemanofintegritywithproudappearance,andthemasterofPemberley.Charlotte,agirlof27yearsoldwithplain-looking,isactuallyintelligentandsensibletoo.However,shemarriedtotheclergymanMr.Collins,whoisanarrow-mindedsycophant,excessivelydevotedtohispatroness.
Inthisnovel,thereareseveralpairsfriends.DarcyandBingley,JaneandMissBingley,ElizabethandCharlotteandsoon.HoweverBingley’sdecisionisaffectedbyDacry.AndthefriendshipbetweenJaneandMissBingleyisjustontheSurface.ButElizabethandCharlottearegoodfriendswhentheywereveryyoung,theycanenjoytheirhappinessandsadness.Nomatterwhatkindofdifferencetheymakeintheend,theyalsoaregoodfriends.Thattheycouldbecomegoodfriendsisbasedonsomecommongroundsofthesocial,andthepersonalitiesofthem.Theenviornmenttheylivesandtheirpositioninthesocietyarelikethesame.Inaddition,theyhavethesameCommonlanguage.Asbothofthemarecleverandsensible.

JaneAustenwasborninSteventon,Hampshine,whereherfatherwasarector.Shewastheseconddaughterandtheseventhchildinafamilyofeight.Duringtheforty-twoyearsofherlife,Austenhadcompletedsixnovels[NorthangerAbbey,senseandsensibility,Prideandprejudice,MansfieldPark,Emma,andPersuasion]andleftbehindthreefragments.PrideandPrejudiceisJaneAusten'smasterpiece.Herfatherwasafinescholar witha goodlibrary.Shewasbroughtupinanintelligentandrestrictenviornment. Herintelligenceandgeniusofwritingwasdugbyherfamily whenshewasveryyoung.ShebegantowritewhileinherteensandcompletedtheoriginalmanuscriptofPrideandPrejudice.Herfatherencouragedhertowrite,and Henry,thebrothershelovesbest helpedhertopublishallhersixnovels.Shehasasister,whoisagoodfriendofher.TherelationshipbetweenthistwosisterisjustlikeElizabethandJaneinPrideandPrijudice.MostofthematerialaboutJaneAustenisgotfromtheletterstohersisiter.JaneAustendidnotgetmarriedlifelong.But therewereseveraltimesshe wasintheedgeofmarriage.Whenshewas27asCharlotte,sheacceptayoungmanasCollinsinPrideand Prejudice. However,shechangedhermindafteronenight'sconsideration.Fromthisevent,wecangetthatJaneAustenwantedtoimitateCharlottetomakeoptionwith practicalness.Butintheend,shefoundshecouldnotaccpeptamanwithoutanythingsheadmires.
AlthoughJaneAustenlivedmainlyinthenineteenthcentury,shewasawriteroftheearlierrealistschool.Insteadofwritingnovelsofsentimental,Gothicandromantictendencies,she wrotethosestoriesaboutcountrylife.However,withgreatdetailsdrawnfromeverydaylife,thepicturesofhercharactersarevividlyportaryedandeveryonecomesalive.Herplotsappearnatural,unforced.Allthecharactershavetheirownplacesintheplotandcontributetothemainstory.NowondermanypeoplehaveregardedJaneAustenasoneofthefewnovelistwhohavemanagedfullytosatisfytherequirementsintheartofnovelwriting.Eventodayherworks arecitiedasperfctexamplesofrealorpureart.

PrideandPrejudiceisthematerspieceofJaneAusten.Andsheherselflovesthisnovelbest.TheinitialtitileofthisnovelisFirstImpressionswhichwaswrittenbetweenOctober1796andAugust1797.Apublisherrejectedthemanuscript,anditwasnotuntil1809thatAustenbegantherevisionsthatwouldbringittoitsfinalform.PrideandPrejudicewaspublishedinJanuary1813.Thoughpublishinganonymouslypreventedherfromacquiringanauthorialreputation,italsoenabledhertopreserveherprivacyatatimewhenEnglishsocietyassociatedafemale’sentranceintothepublicspherewithareprehensiblelossoffemininity.withsimplelanguageandconversingdialogues,itissurpringlyrealistic.Underthecomictint,thisbooktellsfourdiferentkindsofmarriages,whichincludingthosethispaperwouldanalyse.CriticsoftenaccuseAustenofportrayingalimitedworld.Asaclergyman’sdaughter,JaneAustenwouldhavedoneparishworkandwascertainlyawareofthepooraroundher.However,shewroteaboutherownworld,nottheirs.Thecritiquesshemakesofclassstructureseemtoincludeonlythemiddleclassandupperclass;thelowerclasses,iftheyappearatall,aregenerallyservantswhoseemperfectlypleasedwiththeirlot.Howevertheshortagewouldnotlowertheglamousofthisnovel.AseventhesmallestsectionofArc,ifwecarryoutstringentchecksit,wewillbeabletofindoutthelatestroundofthearcthatcentertodeterminetheradius,andinaccordancewiththeoriginalsizeandlocationofthisroundtore-draw.

Atthattime,theIndustrialRevolutionofthe18thcenturymadewomen'sliberationpossible.Massproductionneededmorehandsandmachinecouldbeoperatedbywomenwhowerenotphysicallyasstrongasmen.Thelower-classwomenbecamewageearnersinfactories.Thiswasthebeginningoftheirindependence.But,womenstillenjoyalowsocialstatusinsociety,therewasnorequirementforacademiceducationforwomen,theyhavenowaytogeteducation,andverylittleopportunityforwomentouseknowledge.Therefore,marriageisagoodwayoutforwomen.Ontheotherhand,PropertyisaveryimportantfactorinJaneAusten'stime.Onlyyoungwomenwithbeautifulappearanceandfoodfamilybackgroundcantheyhavelotsofopportunitiestogetasatisfactorymarriage.
ChapterTwo CharacterofElizabeth
InPrideandPrejudice,theauthoressareatedasupremelyspiritedandattractiveheroine,whoesnameisElizabethBennet.ElizabethistheseconddaughterofBennets'familyasJaneAustendoesandsheisalsoherfather'sfavoritedaughterwhohavinginheritedhiswitandintelligence.ElizabethisthemostintelligentandsensibleofthefiveBennetsisters.Sheiswellreadandquick-witted,withatonguethatoccasionallyprovestoosharpforherowngood.HerrealizationofDarcy’sessentialgoodnesseventuallytriumphsoverherinitialprejudiceagainsthim.JaneAustenherselfsaidwhenshewotetohersister:
