PresidentWashingtonusuallywenttotheworksiteandoversawthebuildingoftheHouseafteritstartedtobebuiltinOctoberof1792,buthedidn’tliveintheHouse.ThefirstfamilywhomovedintotheHousein1800isJohnAdams.SincetheHouseisthePresident’sprivatehome,eachPresidentmadesomechangesanddecoratedsomepartsoftheHouseaccordingtotheirownneedsandinterests.ThegreatestchangesweremadebyPresidentHarrySTruman.However,theoutsidestonewallsarekeptthesameastheywerewhentheHousewasbuilttwohundredyearsago.
TheWhiteHouseisopentothepublic,freeofcharge.ThefirstPresidentwhoopenedtheHousetopublictourswasThomasJefferson.HealsowelcomedvisitorstohisreceptionsonNewYear’sDayandontheFourthofJuly.
