LadiesandGentlemen,Iamfullyawarethatyouhavebeenlockedinheresince9.30orsomethingandIsuspectthatyouhavebeentalkedtofuriouslyallthattime.Thelastthingyouwantisanotherlecturewhenmostofyouareprobablyusedtogivinglecturesratherthanhavingtolistentothem.

Inparticular,IwouldliketothankSirAndrewLikierman,whowasinvolvedinmyAccountingforSustainabilityProjectatitsinception,andofcourse,theLondonBusinessSchoolforkindlyhostingusall,particularlyinitsanniversaryyear.AndIalsowantedtosay‘manyhappyreturnsoftheday'.
Iunderstandthat50yearsago,theLondonBusinessSchoolwasestablishedbasedonthenotionthatmanagementneededtobeprofessionalizedinthesamewayaslawandaccountancy,inordertoimproveBritain'seconomicperformance.Andwithover150,000studentspassingthroughitsdoorssincethen,itisclearthattheLondonBusinessSchoolandotherbusinessschoolshaveplayedanimportantroleinshapingglobaleconomicsuccess.
Anniversariesareatimenotjusttolookback,butalso,perhapstolookaheadandconsiderwhatthefuturemaybring.ItisthereforeperhapsfittingthatwearehereinLBS's50thanniversaryyearaswelookaheadtowardswhatthenext50yearswillbring,andthekindofknowledge,understandingandskillsthatleadersarelikelytoneedinordertoanticipateandrespondeffectivelytothechallengesahead.
In50years'time,ourchildrenandgrandchildrenwillbefacingaradicallydifferentworld.Thewarningsignsarealreadyhereforalltosee.Whilstweliveinatimeofgreatwealthandopportunityformany,itisalsoatimedoggedbyincreasingturbulenceandaratherterrifyingcombinationofrisks–persistentpovertyandapopulationofsevenbillionthatisstillrisingunsustainablyfast;thedepletionandover-consumptionoffinitenaturalresources;andtheveryrealandaccumulatingriskofcatastrophicclimatechange.
TherecentXXXX年reportfromtheIntergovernmentalPanelonClimateChangemakesclearthatthe‘severe'–astheyputit–‘pervasiveandirreversibleconsequences'ofclimatechange,ifleftunchecked,couldbebeyondourcapacitytorectify.Thoseconsequencesincludemoreofwhatwearealreadyseeingintheformofextremeweathereventsthatdamageourinfrastructureanddisruptiveweatherpatternsthatundermineourabilitytofeedagrowingpopulation.
Now,LadiesandGentlemen,Iknowonlytoowellthattherearesirenvoicesonallsidestellingusthatthisisalltotalrubbish,dreamtupbyhalf-bakedenvironmentalistsbentondestroyingcapitalismasweknowit,butitmustsurelybethecasethat,inthefuture,successfulorganizationswillactuallybethosewhich,accordingtobestrisk-managementpractice,haveredefinedtheirbusinessmodelstotryandadapttothisverydifferentworld.Itseemscleartomethatthosewhofindwaystousenaturalresourcesinasustainable,and“circular”way,withnothinggoingtowaste,willfindthemselvesuncoveringnewsourcesofinnovation,reducingtheirrisksandincreasingtheircompetitiveadvantage.Evenmore,successwillbedefinedbythosewhohaveshownrealleadershipinhelpingustochangetrajectoryandavoidtheworstoutcomesthat,atpresent,seemsolikely.
Andfunnilyenough,thinkingaboutthecirculareconomy,Iwaslookingatjustoneortwoexamplesfromcompaniesthathavestartedtomoveinthisdirection.OneofwhichisRoyalDutchStateMines,andImettheCEOafewofyearsagocalledFeikeSijbesma,aremarkableman,thatIthinkPollyintroducedmeto.Anditisanintriguingexamplethathewascourageousandrobustenoughtomovehiscompanyoutofaprofitablefossilfuelbasedpetrochemicalbusinessintobiotechnologyandlifescienceandanimalnutritionproducts.

OverthethreeyearsleadinguptoXXXX年,Phillips'growthinproductswithastrongsustainabilityfocuswas8.7timesfasterthantheaveragegrowthofthecompany.Justtwoexamples,alwaysagoodthingtogiveexamples,Ithink.
ButLadiesandGentlemen,afterthefinancialcrashinXXXX年thereweremanytobeheardsayingitwasincreasinglyclearthatbusinessasusualwassimplynotanoption.However,oldhabitstendtodieveryhardandnowweneedtoinnovatelikeneverbefore,andtoacceleratethepaceoflearningandchangeifwearetohaveachanceofafuturewemightwant.Buttoday'sfinancialsystemdoesnotactivelyrewardlong-termthinking,aswehavebeenhearing,nordoesitrecognizethedependencyofoureconomicsuccessonthehealthandstabilityofourcommunitiesandofthenaturalenvironment,alltoooftenregardedasanirrelevantdistraction.
Now,IsuspectitisonlytooobviousthatIamnotanysortoffinancialorbusinessexpert,butitoccurredtomesome15yearsagothatmanyofthetraditionaltoolsandtechniquesforfinanceandaccounting–particularlyforsustainability–thatwordwhichismuchused–werenolongerfitforpurpose.Andthisleadstosub-optimaldecision-makingbycompanies,governmentsandinvestors.Thatiswhy,afteraninitialconversationwiththethenComptrollerandAuditor-GeneraloftheNationalAuditOffice,IsetupmyAccountingforSustainabilityProjectovertenyearsago,withitsCFOandAccountingBodiesLeadershipNetworks,andwhy,LadiesandGentlemen,throughtheCambridgeInstituteforSustainabilityLeadership,IlaunchedClimateWisefortheinsurancesector,theBankingEnvironmentInitiativeandtheInvestmentLeadersGroup–alldesignedtoworkwiththeresearch,financeandaccountingcommunitytosupportafundamentalshifttowardsbusinessmodelsthatdriveasustainableeconomy.
Iknowthatformanyfinanceprofessionals,“sustainability”isatermthatimmediatelysuggeststhekindsofmeasuresthatfrustraterobustdecision-makingandthemaximizationofprofits.Fartoooften,sustainabilityisseenasa“nice-to-have”,withnorequirementforaseatattheboardroomtable.ThisreallyisIwouldhavethought,averyshort-sightedandoutdatedview!

Forwhatitisworth,Ihavelongbeenconvincedthatbusinessschoolshaveafundamentallyimportantroletoplayinallofthis,boththroughtheirresearchandtheirteaching,whichiswhyIamsogladyouareallheretoday.You,LadiesandGentlemen,areideallyplacedtochallengeestablishedpreceptsandprovidenewthinkingthatwillhelporganizationstoimprovetheirmanagementof,andaccountingfor,socialandenvironmentalissues.But,aboveall,nooneisbetterplacedtotranslatethatthinkingintotheeducationyouoffertothenextgenerationofbusinessleaders,equippingthemwiththeunderstandingandskillstheyneedforthisuncertainfuture.
