Americansdonotbelieveinthepoweroffate,andtheylookatpeoplewhodoasbeingbackward,primitive,ornaive.IntheAmericancontext,tobe"fatalistic"istobesuperstitious,lazy,orunwillingtotakeinitiative.Everyoneshouldhavecontroloverwhateverintheenvironmentmightpotentiallyaffecthimorher.Theproblemsofone'slifearenotseenashavingresultedfrombadluckasmuchashavingcomefromone'slazinessandunwillingnesstotakeresponsibilityinpursuingabetterlife.
IntheAmericanmind,changeisseenasindisputablygood,leadingtodevelopment,improvement,progress.Manyolder,moretraditionalculturesconsiderchangedisruptiveanddestructive;theyvaluestability,continuity,tradition,andancientheritage-noneofwhichareconsideredveryimportantintheUnitedStates.
TimeisofutmostimportancetomostAmericans.Itissomethingtobeon,kept,filled,saved,used,spent,wasted,lost,gained,planned,given,evenkilled.Americansaremoreconcernedwithgettingthingsaccomplishedontimethantheyarewithdevelopinginterpersonalrelations.Theirlivesseemcontrolledbythelittlemachinestheywearontheirwrists,cuttingtheirdiscussionsoffabruptlytomaketheirnextappointmentontime.ThisphilosophyhasenabledAmericanstobeextremelyproductive,andproductivityIshighlyvaluedIntheircountry.
EqualityissocherishedintheU.S.thatitisseenashavingareligiousbasis.Americansbelievethatallpeoplearecreatedequalandthatallshouldhaveanequalopportunitytosucceed.Thisconceptofequalityisstrangetoseven-eighthsoftheworldwhichviewsstatusandauthorityasdesirable,eveniftheyhappentobenearthebottomofthesocialorder.SinceAmericansliketotreatforeigners"Justlikeanybodyelse",newcomerstotheU.S.shouldrealizethatnoinsultorpersonalindignityisintendediftheyaretreatedinalessthan-deferentialmannerbywaitersinrestaurants,clerksinstoresandhotels,taxidrivers,andotherservicepersonnel.
Americansviewthemselvesashighlyindividualisticintheirthoughtsandactions.Theyresistbeingthoughtofasrepresentativesofanyhomogeneousgroup.Whentheydojoingroups,theybelievetheyarespecial.Justalittledifferentfromothermembersofthesamegroup.IntheU.S.youwillfindpeoplefreelyexpressingavarietyofopinionsanywhereandanytime.Yet,inspiteofthisindependence,almostallAmericansendupvotingforoneoftheirtwomajorpoliticalparties.Individualismleadstoprivacy,whichAmericansseeasdesirable.Thewordprivacydoesnotexistinmanynon-Westernlanguages.IfItdoes,itislikelytohaveanegativeconnotation,suggestinglonelinessorforcedisolation.ItisnotuncommonforAmericanstosay,andalmosttobelieve:

Americanstakecreditonlyforwhattheyaccomplishasindividuals.Theygetnocreditforhavingbeenbornintoarichfamilybutpridethemselvesinhavingclimbedtheladderofsuccess,towhateverlevel,allbythemselves.InanEnglish-languagedictionary,therearemorethan100compositewordsthathavetheword"self"asaprefix:
self-aware.self-confident,self-conscious,self-contented,self-control,self-criticism,self-deception,self-defeating,self-denial.Theequivalentofthesewordscannotbefoundinmostotherlanguages.ItisanindicatorofhowhighlyAmericansregardtheself-mademanorwoman.
Manyothercountrieshavedevelopedsubtle,sometimeshighlyritualistic,waysofinformingothersofunpleasantinformation.Americanspreferthedirectapproach.Theyarelikelytobecompletelyhonestindeliveringtheirnegativeevaluations,andtoconsider,anythingotherthanthemostdirectandopenapproachtobe"dishonest"and"insincere".AnyoneintheU.S.whousesanintermediarytodeliverthemessagewillalsobeconsidered"manipulative"and"untrustworthy".Ifyoucomefromacountrywheresavingfaceisimportant,beassuredthatAmericansarenottryingtomakeyoulosefacewiththeirdirectness.
Asamatteroffact,themajorAmericanValueisdistinctfromChinese.WeoughttoacceptitwhenwecommunicatewithAmericans.Thus,weneedmakeourselvesthinkgloballyandactlocally.
