Themodernsocietydependsontheelectricitysupplymoreheavilythaneverbefore.Itcannotbeimaginedwhattheworldshouldbeiftheelectricitysupplywereinterruptedallovertheworld.Electricpowersystems(orelectricenergysystems),providingelectricitytothemodernsociety,havebecomeindispensablecomponentsoftheindustrialworld.Thefirstcompleteelectricpowersystem(comprisingagenerator,cable,fuse,meter,andloads)wasbuiltbyThomasEdison–thehistoricPearlStreetStationinNewYorkCitywhichbeganoperationinSeptember1882.ThiswasaDCsystemconsistingofasteam-engine-drivenDCgeneratorsupplyingpowerto59customerswithinanarearoughly1.5kminradius.Theload,whichconsistedentirelyofincandescentlamps,wassuppliedat110Vthroughanundergroundcablesystem..Withinafewyearssimilarsystemswereinoperationinmostlargecitiesthroughouttheworld.WiththedevelopmentofmotorsbyFrankSpraguein1884,motorloadswereaddedtosuchsystems.Thiswasthebeginningofwhatwoulddevelopintooneofthelargestindustriesintheworld.InspiteoftheinitialwidespreaduseofDCsystems,theywerealmostcompletelysupersededbyACsystems.By1886,thelimitationsofDCsystemswerebecomingincreasinglyapparent.Theycoulddeliverpoweronlyashortdistancefromgenerators.
Tokeeptransmissionpowerlosses(I2R)andvoltagedropstoacceptablelevels,voltagelevelshadtobehighforlong-distancepowertransmission.Suchhighvoltageswerenotacceptableforgenerationandconsumptionofpower;therefore,aconvenientmeansforvoltagetransformationbecameanecessity.ThedevelopmentofthetransformerandACtransmissionbyL.GaulardandJDGibbsofParis,France,ledtoACelectricpowersystems.In1889,thefirstACtransmissionlineinNorthAmericawasputintooperationinOregonbetweenWillametteFallsandPortland.Itwasasingle-phaselinetransmittingpowerat4,000Voveradistanceof21km.WiththedevelopmentofpolyphasesystemsbyNikolaTesla,theACsystembecameevenmoreattractive.By1888,TeslaheldseveralpatentsonACmotors,generators,transformers,andtransmissionsystems.Westinghouseboughtthepatentstotheseearlyinventions,andtheyformedthebasisofthepresent-dayACsystems.Inthe1890s,therewasconsiderablecontroversyoverwhethertheelectricutilityindustryshouldbestandardizedonDCorAC.Bytheturnofthecentury,theACsystemhadwonoutovertheDCsystemforthefollowingreasons:
(1)VoltagelevelscanbeeasilytransformedinACsystems,thus
providingtheflexibilityforuseofdifferentvoltagesforgeneration,transmission,andconsumption.
(2)ACgeneratorsaremuchsimplerthanDCgenerators.
(3)ACmotorsaremuchsimplerandcheaperthanDCmotors.
Thefirstthree-phaselineinNorthAmericawentintooperationin1893
——a2,300V,12kmlineinsouthernCalifornia.IntheearlyperiodofACpowertransmission,frequencywasnotstandardized.Thisposesaproblemforinterconnection.Eventually60HzwasadoptedasstandardinNorthAmerica,although50Hzwasusedinmanyothercountries.Theincreasingneedfortransmittinglargeamountsofpoweroverlongerdistancecreatedanincentivetouseprogressivelyhighvoltagelevels.Toavoidtheproliferationofanunlimitednumberofvoltages,theindustryhasstandardizedvoltagelevels.InUSA,thestandardsare115,138,161,and230kVforthehighvoltage(HV)class,and345,500and765kVfortheextra-highvoltage(EHV)class.InChina,thevoltagelevelsinuseare10,35,110forHVclass,and220,330(onlyinNorthwestChina)and500kVforEHVclass.Thefirst750kVtransmissionlinewillbebuiltinthenearfutureinNorthwestChina.WiththedevelopmentoftheAC/DCconvertingequipment,highvoltageDC(HVDC)transmissionsystemshavebecomemoreattractiveandeconomicalinspecialsituations.TheHVDCtransmissioncanbeusedfortransmissionoflargeblocksofpoweroverlongdistance,andprovidinganasynchronouslinkbetweensystemswhereACinterconnectionwouldbeimpracticalbecauseofsystemstabilityconsiderationorbecausenominalfrequenciesofthesystemsaredifferent.Thebasicrequirementtoapowersystemistoprovideanuninterruptedenergysupplytocustomerswithacceptablevoltagesandfrequency.Becauseelectricitycannotbemassivelystoredunderasimpleandeconomicway,theproductionandconsumptionofelectricitymustbedonesimultaneously.Afaultormisoperationinanystagesofapowersystemmaypossiblyresultininterruptionofelectricitysupplytothecustomers.Therefore,anormalcontinuousoperationofthepowersystemtoprovideareliablepowersupplytothecustomersisofparamountimportance.Powersystemstabilitymaybebroadlydefinedasthepropertyofapowersystemthatenablesittoremaininastateofoperatingequilibriumundernormaloperatingconditionsandtoregainanacceptablestateofequilibriumafterbeingsubjectedtoadisturbance..Instabilityinapowersystemmaybemanifestedinmanydifferentwaysdependingonthesystemconfigurationandoperatingmode.Traditionally,thestabilityproblemhasbeenoneofmaintainingsynchronousoperation.Sincepowersystemsrelyonsynchronousmachinesforgenerationofelectricalpower,anecessaryconditionforsatisfactorysystemoperationisthatallsynchronousmachinesremaininsynchronismor,colloquially"instep".Thisaspectofstabilityisinfluencedbythedynamicsofgeneratorrotoranglesandpower-anglerelationships,andthenreferredto"rotoranglestability"

satisfycertainrequirements.Thismayinvolvethesystemresponseoroptimizationofthesysteminaspecifiedway.Theserequirementsthatacontrolsystemmustmeetaregenerallycalledperformancespecifications.
