摘要
在世界大融合的今天,成功的跨文化交际对个人的发展、不同文化之间人们的交往和友好合作都有着至关重要的意义。
然而,似乎中国英语外语教学在一定程度上并未足够重视跨文化交际能力的培养,跨文化交际失误和障碍仍然频繁存在。
中国迫切需要这种人才,他们熟悉外国文化,并能跨越文化与他人进行准确和适当的沟通。
在英语教学中,这是一个新的挑战。
从跨文化的角度来看,笔者建议,我们应结合语言教学与文化教学,培养学生跨文化交际能力。
因此,本文就英语教学中如何培养学生跨文化交际能力进行了探索,文章首先阐述了培养跨文化交际能力的重要性,指出中国外语教学在培养学生跨文化交际能力方面存在的问题;其次介绍了语言,交际和文化的定义及特点,阐明了语言与文化,文化与交际之间不可分离的关系;进而阐述了跨文化交际能力的概念以及组成部分;最后着重从六个方面深入探讨在英语教学中培养跨文化交际能力的策略。

Abstract
Inthemoreandmoreglobalizingworld,interculturalcommunicationhasbecomeanecessity.Successfulinterculturalcommunicationiscriticaltothedevelopmentofindividualsandcooperationofpeoplefromdifferentcultures.However,itseemsthatEnglishteachingasaforeignlanguage(EFL)inChinadoesnotfocusonthedevelopmentofinterculturalcommunicativecompetenceandfailuresandobstaclesofinterculturalcommunicationhavenotbeenavoidedeffectively.Chinaneedspeoplewhoarefamiliarwithforeignculturesandcanhandleinterculturalcommunicationsuccessfullydesperately.ThisisabigchallengeinEnglishteaching.
Fromtheperspectiveofinter-culture,theauthorproposesthatweshouldcombinecultureteachingwithlanguageteaching,cultivatelearners’interculturalcommunicativecompetence(ICC).Therefore,theauthormakesanexplorationoncultivatingstudents’interculturalcommunicativecompetenceinEnglishteaching.Thisthesisfirstlyexplainstheimportanceofdevelopinginterculturalcommunicativecompetence,andpointsouttheproblemsofChina'sforeignlanguageteachinginthetrainingofstudents’interculturalcommunicativecompetence;itthenmakesanintroductionofthedefinitionandcharacteristicsoflanguage,communicationandcultureandtheircloserelationship;nextitintroducesthedefinitionandelementsofICC;lastly,itendsthispaperwithemphasisonexploringwaysofcultivatinginterculturalcommunicativecompetenceinEnglishteachingfromsixaspects.

1Introduction
Nowadaysinterculturalcommunicationisbecomingmoreandmoreimportantwiththerapiddevelopmentoftheworldeconomyandfrequentcontactsamongdifferentcountries.Furthermore,thedevelopmentofWorldWebandInternetischangingthewholeworldintoa“globalvillage”.Sothesituationstodayrequireasmoothandconvenientcommunication.
Throughthepastcenturyoflanguageteaching,differentmethodsandapproacheshaveinfluencedandmetchangingdemandsofEnglishlanguageteaching,eithertomeetthedemandofsocialandeconomicdevelopmentortoadjusttotheeducationalenvironment.Globally,thesemethodsorapproachesare:
theGrammar-TranslationMethod,theDirectMethod,theReadingMethod,theCognitiveMethodwhichemphasizethatstudentsshouldbecomethecenterofteaching,andteachingprocessshouldcenteredonstudents’activitiesandtheCommunicativeApproach,withoneofitsprinciplesis“teachingshouldbesubordinatetolearning”(Richard&Rodgers,2001),thetrendshowsthatthefocushavebeenmovedtolearner-centeredapproach.However,incurrentforeignlanguageteachinginmanyregionsofChina,teachersstilllaythefocusonteachinggrammarrulesorstructuresratherthancreatingareal-lifesituationinwhichstudentsspeak,makeupdialoguesandusethetargetlanguage.CulturecomponentsincludedinlanguagearetotallyneglectedinEnglishteaching.Whenthestudentsusethelanguageinarealcontext,theyoftencommunicatewithforeignersinappropriately,whichmaymaketheirinterlocutorsembarrassedorcausemanymisunderstanding.
AccordingtothenewnationalEnglishcoursestandardsforcollege,theoverallgoalofEnglishteachingistocultivateandimprovethestudent’scomprehensivecompetenceoflanguageuse.Andtheformingofthisabilityisbasedonthedevelopmentoflanguageskills,languageknowledge,learners’attitude,learningstrategiesandculturalawareness.Acquiringknowledgeandskillsarethebasisofthisability,whileculturalawarenessistheguaranteeofappropriatelanguageuse.Attitudeisanimportantfactorthataffectsthestudent’slearninganddevelopment.Learningstrategiescanalsoensuretheefficiencyoflearninganddevelopmentofthecompetenceofself-study.Thesefiveaspectsconstitutecomprehensivecompetenceoflanguageuse.(NationalStandards,2001)
Themainpurposeofthisthesisistofindthemethodstocultivatetheinterculturalcommunicativecompetenceforstudents.
2Language,CultureandCommunication
Everydayweuselanguagetocommunicatewithotherpeople,andthelanguageweuseandthewayhowwecommunicatereflectsthecharacteristicsofourculture.
2.1Language
Whatislanguage?
Manyexpertsfromdifferentfieldshaveoffereddifferentanswerstoitanddifferentdefinitionsoflanguageinaccordancewithemphasisonthedifferentaspectsoflanguage.Manylinguistshavecometoanagreementthatlanguageisasystemofsymbolswiththebasicpurposeofhumancommunication.“Languageisasystemofarbitraryvocalsymbolsusedforhumancommunication.”(MeiDeming,2003:

Thisdefinitionshowstheimportantfeatureoflanguagethatitisusedtocommunicatepurposely.Communicationisthefundamentalfunctionoflanguage.Oursocietywouldnotoperatenormallywithoutlanguageasamediumofcommunication.
TheAmericanlinguistCharlesHocketthasspecifiedthefollowinguniquepropertiesofhumanlanguage,duality,arbitrariness,productivity,displacementandculturaltransmission.Thebasicfeaturesoflanguagemakelanguageandculturecloselyrelatedandaccountforculturaldiversity.Languageservestwoimportantculturalfunctions.First,itisthemeansofpreservingculture;and,second,itisthemediumoftransmittingculturetonewgenerations.
2.2Culture
Culture,fromtheLatinwordcultura,meaning“tocultivate”,isatermthathasdifferentmeanings.Cultureiscomplexanddifficulttodefine.Whatisculture?
AccordingtoXiXili(2011:

Initsbroadsense,culturecanbedefinedas“attributeofman”,includingwhateverdistinguisheshumanbeingsfromanimalsandnature.ItisalsocalledlargeCCulture,takingcultureasattributesorcharacteristicsofmanascontrastedwiththoseofanimalsandnature.TherearesixcomponentsofcultureinlargeCCulture:
material,socialinstitutionsandorganizations,scienceandtechnology,languageandothercommunicationalsystems;customsandbehavioralpatterns,valuesystems,nationaltraits,aestheticstandardsandthinkingpatterns.Initsnarrowsense,culturemeansthetotalwayoflifeofapeople.Itreferstothepatternofcustoms,traditions,socialhabits,values,beliefsandlanguageofasocietyascontrastedwithwayoflifeofotherpeoples,emphasizingthedifferencesbetweendifferentgroupsofpeople.CultureinthissenseisknownassmallCCulture,takingagivencultureascontrasttoothercultures.
Culturepermeateseveryaspectofhumanlife,conditioninganddeterminingpeople’sbehavior,includinglinguisticbehavior.Cultureissuchacomplexnotionthatitisalmostimpossibletounderstandholisticallyanditisalsounnecessary.Ascultureinfluenceseveryaspectofhumanlife,ithasdifferentfocusandemphasis.Whatweneedtofocusistheaspectcloselyrelateswithinterculturalcommunication.
Thefollowingaresomeimportantcharacteristicsofculturewhichcanhelpstudentsbetterunderstandofinterculturalcommunicativecompetence.
(1)Cultureislearnedandshared.
Cultureissharedlearnedbehaviorwhichhaspassedfromonegenerationtoanotherforpurposeofpromotingindividualandsocialsurvival,adaptation,growthanddevelopment.Itisthecommondenominatorthatmakestheactionsofindividualsintelligibletothegroup.Culturehasbothexternal(e.g.,artifacts,roles)andinternalrepresentations(e.g.,values,attitudes).One’ssubjectiveculturalbeliefsandvaluesinfluencehisinterpretationoftheworldandinteractionsinit.Whilehumanarenotbornwiththeimprintofaparticularculture.Allcultureislearnedpostnatallyratherthaninherited.Onehastolearnone’sculturethroughhisdailylife.Peopleofaculturecontinuouslylearntheirpatternsofbehaviorandwaysofthinkingthroughalltheirlife.Theymaylearntheirculturethroughinteraction,observationandimitation.
