Peoplewhohaveanoptimisticviewonlifearemorelikelytolivelonger,aUSstudysaidonWednesday.
Thestudy,publishedintheAmericanJournalofEpidemiology,analyzeddatafrom2004to2012from70,000womenenrolledintheNurses’HealthStudy,along-runningUSstudytrackingwomen’shealthviasurveyseverytwoyears.
Theresearcherslookedatparticipants’levelsofoptimismandotherfactorsthatmightplayaroleinhowoptimismmayaffectmortalityrisk,suchasrace,highbloodpressure,diet,andphysicalactivity.
Itfoundthemostoptimisticwomen,orthetop25%,hadanearly30percentlowerriskofdyingfromanyofthediseasesanalyzedinthestudycomparedwiththeleastoptimisticwomen,orthebottom25%.
Themostoptimisticwomenhada16percentlowerriskofdyingfromcancer;38percentlowerriskofdyingfromheartdisease;39percentlowerriskofdyingfromstroke;38percentlowerriskofdyingfromrespiratorydisease;and52percentlowerriskofdyingfrominfection.

Thefindingsaretheculminationofasurveywhichhastrackedmorethan5,000peoplesincetheirbirthin1946.Itiswell-establishedthatchildhoodinfluencescanhaveprofoundeffectonthedevelopingbrain,butthisisoneofthefirststudiesthathaveattemptedtomeasuretheirimpactoversuchalongperiod
