She was the first writer to receive this award in short story. She writes mostly from the female perspective and focuses on the ordinary women

    3、s ordinary life experience in suburban town in Canada. Her works are famous for keen perspective, detailed description and realistic style. Female characters in her works are various; however, in their processes of growing up, they have experienced different degrees of female consciousness awakening

    4、, vividly reflecting the process of female self-growth in pursuing independence. This thesis using Munros Runaway as a text of closing reading, analyzes the awakening of women consciousness from three pespectives, namely family, society and nature, in order to expound the feminist thoughts contained

She is good at writing short stories, which helps her win respect and

    6、reputation. Happy shade of the dance is her first collection of short stories, which won the high praise. By virtue of this, Alice Monroe won the Governor Generals Award in 1968. Her another collection of short stories, Who Do You Think You Are? , was runner-up for the Booker Prize in 1978. In addit

    7、ion, Alice Munro has received many other prizes. She earned two Canadian Booksellers Association Awards in 1971 and 2005 and so on. In 2013, Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize in Literary. This is the biggest award she has ever received. The Award Words “master of contemporary short stories” given by S

    8、wedish Academy was the best praise for her.On July 31, 1931, Alice Munro was born in a common Ranchers family in a small town, Wingham, in the south of Ontario in Canada. Her father, Robert Eric Laidlaw, was a rancher, raising foxes. Her mother, Anne Clarke Laidlaw, was a primary school teacher. Her

    9、 parents took her to this place in 1927. They bought a farm, beginning to raising foxes. However, they chose the wrong time to begin their career, meeting with the downturn trend of fur market. So she did not live in a rich family. But her parents pay much attention to her education. She spends all

    10、her life time living in Canada: She grew up and got educated in the south of Ontario, and then lived twenty years in Vancouver with her first husband. She returned to the south of Ontario and lives there till now. The life in this small town has influenced her a lot on her later writing career. “She

    11、 is no doubt Canadas leading short-fiction writer and has, over five decades, created an impressive oeuvre” (Nischik, 2007: 205). She began to write when she was a teenager. At that time, she has shown her talent for writing. Marcela said that “Many characters in the stories may find prototypes from

    12、 her own family or her neighborhood” (Marcela, 2006: 83). Alice Munro never admits that she is a feminist writer, but almost all her fictions are written from female perspective. Munro was unavoidably influenced by the second wave of feminism, which appeared in the 1960s in Europe. The second wave o

    13、f feminism inherited and developed the views of the first wave, aimed at criticizing gender discrimination and patriarchy. Whats more, the second wave emphasizes womens inner consciousness, awakening the inner thoughts of women to change men-centered society. Therefore, it is necessary and meaningfu

    14、l to analyze Runaway from feminist perspective and to explain the feminism contained in it.1.2 An introduction to RunawayMunro has shaped many ordinary female characters in her fictions. The theme of her works has been a girls dilemmas coming to terms with her family and the small town she grows up

    15、in and lived evidently in her early short stories. Recently, she has shifted her focus to the trivia of middle-aged women or the elder.Runaway is a typical one that describes different womens experience and dilemmas. It includes eight short stories, dealing with conflicts concerning womens different

    16、 issues, such as the relationship between husband and wife, relationship between daughter and father or mother and so on. The title story Runaway tells Carlas running away from her violent husband with the help of her neighbor Mrs. Jamieson, but unexpectedly, at the end of the story, she returned. A

    17、 series of stories Chance, Soon, and Silence retell the stories of Juliet, focusing on her relationship with her parents Sam and Sara, lover Eric and daughter Penelope through her early twenties and then in middle age. In the story Passion, Grace falls in love with Maury. However, when everyone incl

    18、uding herself thinks they would get married soon, she flees together with Maurys half-brother Neil. Trespasses narrates the story between Lauren, a young girl, and an old woman, Delphine, who is very interested in Lauren. In Tricks, Robin meets her “Mr. Right” after she has finished a play at Stratf

    19、ord. They make a promise that they will meet in the same place next year. However, she missed him at last, because God made a joke on them. Powers is the most ambiguous story. It tells about the tangle of the life among Tessa, a psychic girl, a stranger, Ollie and her friend, Nancy. These eight shor

    20、t stories have something in common in the sense that the heroines are mostly attached to men in the economy, but they all want to get rid of the bondage of men, family and suffering, to obtain real freedom and independence. So they choose to run away for their awakening female consciousness. However

    21、, their female consciousness is not mature enough to make them succeed.1.3Theoretical BasisThe theoretical basis of this study is Feminism. Feminism is a range of political movements, ideologies, and social movements that share a common goal: to define. Establish, and achieve political, economic, pe

    22、rsonal, and social rights for women. (Mary E, 2006:25-27) Feminism appeared in France in 1870, and since then it was introduced into other European countries and America. It has experienced more than a hundred years of development and changes in the West countries. With the development of womens lib

    23、eration movement, feminism can be divided into three periods, including the first wave at the end of eighteenth century, the second wave in 1860s and the third wave in1990s.Bo Di points out that Feminism is also known as the feminist movement, which refers to social theory and political movement mai

    24、nly based on female experience. Except for the critique of social relations, many Feminist supporters also focus on analysis on gender discrimination and promote womens rights and interests. (Bo Di, 2007)Wang Lu and Zhou Wei says that, in the modern society,Postmodern feminism supporters often advoc

    25、ate eliminating the opposition of male and female. On one hand, they affirm the feminist movement to protect womens social rights and interests. On the other hand, feminists try to subvert the traditional family model. In the contemporary society, based on the male-centered patriarchal system, women

    26、 should try to obtain their independence and liberation while maintaining the traditional family model. (qtd. in Wang Lu& Zhou Wei, 2015:101) Munro doesnt advocate feminism and womens struggle in Runaway. However, she pays attention to the survival of human nature rather than ideology from the femal

    27、e perspective. The heroines, faced with self-denial of life, choose a short escape. Womens consciousness of self-independence and not depending on men begins to be awakened and developed. Unfortunately, they cant get rid of the cruel reality. What they can do is to return to the original bondage and

    28、 live bravely. Then they can be themselves and find the relative independence and freedom in their own fields.2.The awakening of female consciousness in familyIn the article “The Sweetness of Home: Class, Culture, and Family Life in Sweden”. (Orvar, 2003: 142-159), points out that home is the pronou

    29、n of feelings, warmness, safety, harmony and comfortable. That is to say that home is like a huge cradle for people. It can provide us with a comfortable space. It can give you strength to realize your dream. It can give you a shelter, when you are faced with natural storm and life storm.However, no

    30、 everyone has home like that. Maybe they will meet with the parents misunderstanding, family members exclusion, domestic violence, and so on. They cant find their identity at home and they cant be recognized. Therefore, when they are faced with these, they will choose to run away.This part focuses o

    31、n the awakening of the women in the family in two aspects. In the patriarchal society, men are always considered superior to women. So men have discourse power in his families. What women can do is to obey them. This part argues that the family-centered women try to find self-identity by fighting ag

    32、ainst the authorities from their parents and husbands. Then, there is the discussion about the important relationships between the daughter and parents, wife and husband. In these stories, escaping from family is most sorrowful. Through the analysis of the relationships in family, it shows the new i

    33、mages of women who want to gain freedom by fighting against the physical and spiritual abuse in the family.2.1 Daughters rebellion against parentsMost of the heroines parents in the novel are influenced by the sexual revolution of the 1950s. They pursue knowledge, independence, thoughts, personality
