Atfirst,hisplanwasto earn moneytobuildasinglewellsomewhereinAfrica.Hecleanedwindowsanddidgardeningforhisfamilyandneighbours.Hesoonreachedhisfirsttargetof$70,butwhenhegavethemoneytoacharity,hewastoldthatitactuallycost$2,000tobuildawell.Seventydollarswasonlyenoughforahandpump.Ryanunderstoodthatahandpumpwouldn’thelpthechildren.Whattheyneededwasawelldugneartheirhomes.
Twothousanddollarswasalotofmoney,butRyandidn’tgiveup.Hewasdeterminedtohelpotherchildrenhavecleanwater.Hestartedtoaskforhelpfromhisclassmatesandneighboursandpersuadedthemto donate money.Atthesametime,afriendofRyan’smotherhelpedmakehisstorygopublic.Afterseveralmonths,Ryanhadraisedthe$2,000,withwhichawellwasbuiltnearaprimaryschoolinUganda.Thechildrenattheschoolnolongerneededtowalkforhourstogetwater.Theyweregratefultohimandinvitedhimtovisit.
InUganda,Ryanatlastsawthefinishedwellwithhisowneyes.Butthatwasnotall.Healsosawhundredsofdelightedstudentswhohadturnedouttowelcomehim.Theysanganddancedhappily.Someevenofferedhimfoodandgifts.AtfirstRyanwasnervous,butsoonagreatwarmthfilledhim.Hereallyhadmadeadifferenceforthesechildren.He brokeintoa joyful smile.
Later,Ryan’sexperienceledhimtosetupa foundation toencouragemorepeopletohelp.Manyinspiredpeoplegavehimtheirsupport.Ryan’sfoundationcontinuestoattractsupportfrommoreandmorepeople,sotheworkofbuildingmorewellscangoon.Today,over800,000peoplein16countriesacrossAfricahavebenefitedfromthelife-changinggiftofclean,safewater.

”.This insight grewfromthedeterminedattitudeofasix-year-oldboywhohadthecourageand perseverance tomakehisdreama reality.

“TheBritishSchindler”:
thelifeofNicholasWinton
ItisAugust1939,andagroupoffrightenedchildrenareboardingatrainatPrague’sWilsonStation.Theirheartbrokenparentsdonotjointhem.Indeed,theyfeartheymayneverseetheirchildrenagain.Buttheyknowthattheirchildrenwilllive.Theseareamongthe669children,mostofthem Jewish,thatNicholasWintonwillgoontosavefromdeathatthehandsofthe Nazis.
NicholasWintonwasbornon19May1909inLondon,toGerman-Jewishparents.ThefamilylatertookBritishnationality.Onleavingschool,WintonworkedinbanksinGermanyandFrance.HereturnedtoBritainin1931,whereheworkedinbusiness.
InDecember1938,afriendaskedWintontocometoPragueto aid peoplewhowereescapingfromtheNazis.InPrague,Wintonsawpeoplelivinginterribleconditionsandwhoseliveswereindanger.HedecidedtohelptransportchildrentosafetyinBritain.Heestablishedanofficetokeeprecordsofthechildren,andthenreturnedtoBritaintofind temporary homesforthem.Heuseddonatedfundsandhisownmoneytopaythe50poundsperchildthattheBritishgovernmentrequired.ByAugust1939,Wintonhadsaved669children.
DuringWorldWarⅡ,WintonservedasanofficerinBritain’sRoyalAirForce.Heleftthe military in1954.Hethenworkedforinternationalcharitiesandforvariouscompanies.Forthemostpart,hedidnotmentionthechildrenhesaved,andhisactionssoondisappearedfrompeople’smemories.
Thatallchangedin1988whenhiswifeGretefoundaforgottenjournalathome.Thejournalcontainedphotographsandnamesofthechildrenandaddressesofthefamiliesthattookthemin.Shesentthejournaltoanewspaper,andthatyearWintonwasseenontheBritishtelevisionprogramme That’sLife.Atonepoint,thehostaskedpeopleintheaudiencetostandupifNicholasWintonhadsavedtheirlives.AshockedWintonwatchedasthemajorityofpeople rosetotheirfeet.Theprogrammebroughthisactionstopublicattention,andWintonbecamearespectedfigurearoundtheworld.
Later,Wintonreceivedvarioushonoursforhis achievement,includinga knighthood in2003,andtheCzechgovernment’shighesthonour,theOrderoftheWhiteLion,in2014.
NicholasWintonpassedawayon1July2015,attheageof106.AstheChinesesayinggoes,“Akind-heartedpersonlivesalonglife.”

gunpowder,papermaking,printingandthe compass.Thesethingschangedtheworldforever.ThentherewerethegreatWesterninventions:
thesteamengine,thetelephoneandtheradio.Andnow,wefindourselvesinthegreatnewageoftechnology.
