Different from the literary aspects and other forms, business English has its own features. By analyzing the linguistic features of business English, this thesis puts
8、forward with some translation principles and strategies, which has influenced on solving the problems of business English. This thesis analyses the linguistic features of business English from several linguistic levels: the lexical level, the syntactic level and the textual level, which includes dis
9、course features and content character. Some examples are analyzed and some common mistakes are corrected on basis of the principles and strategies. The thesis aims at improving the quality of business English and promoting the understanding and exchanging between two trading parties. Key words: busi
10、ness English; linguistic features 从功能理论视角看商务英语翻译之语言特色作 者:刘 怡指导老师:易来宾 (湖南农业大学外国语学院,长沙 410128) 摘 要:近来,随着经济全球化的发展,商务英语在国际贸易中的重要性日益突显。它不同于文学英语等其他形式,具有自身的特点。通过对商务英语语言特点进行分析,本文提出一些翻译的原则和策略,对解决商务翻译的一些问题有一定的意义。文章先从几个语言学角度分析商务英语的语言特点:词汇角度、句法角度、语篇功能角度(包括会话角度和内容角度),其次针对其特点提出几点原则与策略,并在此基础上对大量的商务英语实例进行了分析,对常见错误进
11、行修正。本文旨在提高商务英语的质量,促进贸易双方的沟通及交流。关键词:商务英语,语言特色IntroductionScholars made tremendous contributions to business English translation. Professor Jia Wenbo published a book named Pragmatic Translation with a Functional Few and one of its chapters is contributed to business English translation. However, ther
12、e are few books that offer systematic researches and focus on business English translation and few theories are applied in business English translation. Therefore, what urgent is that the systematic research and its suitable theories on business English translation in China.The thesis will be divide
13、d into five parts. Part One introduces the topic. Part Two goes to the introduction of business English. Part Three presents the analysis of linguistic features from the perspective of functional theory. Part Four analyses the linguistic features of business English from the lexical level, the synta
14、ctic level, the textual level, including discourse features and content character. Last part is the conclusion. So, in the following parts of this thesis, the author will give an introduction of business English. 1 Introduction of business English Business English is part of English, but a special o
15、ne with linguistic features, this part will give an introduction of both linguistic features and business English. 1.1 Definition of business EnglishAccording to Applied Linguistics, business English is one important branch of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and is a variety of English on social
16、 function being used in specified business environment. Hutchinson and Water also stated that business English was a variety of ESP in the tree of ESP. 1 Business English is an organic combination between international business and English language. It seems that we can say that “English” is the med
17、ia, and “business” is the content in business English communication. The business English specialist Nick Brieger put forward his theory of “the category of business English” in 1997 and thought that business English includes: language knowledge, communication skills, professional content, managemen
18、t skills and cultural awareness etc.2 “It is a mediating language between the technicalities of particular business and the language, of the general public. It is not purely for intra-group communication. This is not surprising since business and commerce is by definition an interface between genera
19、l public and the special producer.”3We can find that there is a close relationship between business English and business itself. Here we should stress that “business” is a dynamic concept, the content of which has been increasingly enlarged. Before the nineties of the 20th century, it was based on t
20、he definition on the negotiation of Uruguay Round in GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade), which was mainly referred to international cargo trade. Along with the integration of worlds economy, the usage of internet multimedia technology, the scope of business has been continuously enlarged
21、and accordingly, the concept of business English has also been enlarged. The concept of modern “business” includes such series of negotiation as enquiries and offer, counteroffer, bid and counter-counteroffer, acceptance and order etc.; such series of import and export business as issuing L/C, packi
22、ng and shipment, payment and delivery, insurance, inspection, and arbitration etc.; and it is even related to international finance, foreign insurance, international tourism, international transport, overseas investment, international cooperation etc.1.2 Classification of business EnglishSince inter
23、national business involves various industries as mentioned above, business English is focuses on specific communication requirements for business affairs dealt with in companies, factories and such other related industries as banking, insurance, finance logistics, transportation etc. So business Eng
24、lish covers a wide range of relevant specific English, such as financial English, advertising English, foreign trade English and so on. Mark Ellis and Christine Johnson also stated that “business English differs from other varieties of ESP in that it is often a mix of specific content(relating to a particular job area or industry), and general content(relating to general ability to communication more effectively)”.4From the practical perspectives, business English discourses can be classified into following several types: 1)Business Correspondence, 2)Memorandum, 3)Synop
