NigelMarsh
WhatIthoughtIwoulddoisIwouldstartwithasimplerequest.I’dlikeallofyoutopauseforamoment,youwretchedweaklings,andtakestockofyourmiserableexistence.
NowthatwastheadvicethatSt.Benedictgavehisratherstartledfollowersinthefifthcentury.ItwastheadvicethatIdecidedtofollowmyselfwhenIturned40.Upuntilthatmoment,Ihadbeenthatclassiccorporatewarrior--Iwaseatingtoomuch,Iwasdrinkingtoomuch,IwasworkingtoohardandIwasneglectingthefamily.AndIdecidedthatIwouldtryandturnmylifearound.
Inparticular,IdecidedIwouldtrytoaddressthethornyissueofwork-lifebalance.SoIsteppedbackfromtheworkforce,andIspentayearathomewithmywifeandfouryoungchildren.ButallIlearnedaboutwork-lifebalancefromthatyearwasthatIfounditquiteeasytobalanceworkandlifewhenIdidn’thaveanywork.(Laughter)Notaveryusefulskill,especiallywhenthemoneyrunsout.
SoIwentbacktowork,andI’vespentthesesevenyearssincestrugglingwith,studyingandwritingaboutwork-lifebalance.AndIhavefourobservationsI’dliketosharewithyoutoday.Thefirstis:
ifsociety’stomakeanyprogressonthisissue,weneedanhonestdebate.Butthetroubleissomanypeopletalksomuchrubbishaboutwork-lifebalance.
Allthediscussionsaboutflexi-timeordress-downFridaysorpaternityleaveonlyservetomaskthecoreissue,whichisthatcertainjobandcareerchoicesarefundamentallyincompatiblewithbeingmeaningfullyengagedonaday-to-daybasiswithayoungfamily.
Nowthefirststepinsolvinganyproblemisacknowledgingtherealityofthesituationyou’rein.Andtherealityofthesocietythatwe’reinistherearethousandsandthousandsofpeopleoutthereleadinglivesofquiet,screamingdesperation,wheretheyworklong,hardhoursatjobstheyhatetoenablethemtobuythingstheydon’tneedtoimpresspeopletheydon’tlike.
It’smycontentionthatgoingtoworkonFridayinjeansand[a]T-shirtisn’treallygettingtothenuboftheissue.
ThesecondobservationI’dliketomakeisweneedtofacethetruththatgovernmentsandcorporationsaren’tgoingtosolvethisissueforus.Weshouldstoplookingoutside.It’suptousasindividualstotakecontrolandresponsibilityforthetypeoflivesthatwewanttolead.
Ifyoudon’tdesignyourlife,someoneelsewilldesignitforyou,andyoumayjustnotliketheirideaofbalance.It’sparticularlyimportant--thisisn’tontheWorldWideWeb,isit?
I’mabouttogetfired--it’sparticularlyimportantthatyouneverputthequalityofyourlifeinthehandsofacommercialcorporation.NowI’mnottalkingherejustaboutthebadcompanies--the“abattoirsofthehumansoul,”asIcallthem.
I’mtalkingaboutallcompanies.Becausecommercialcompaniesareinherentlydesignedtogetasmuchoutofyou[as]theycangetawaywith.It’sintheirnature;it’sintheirDNA;it’swhattheydo--eventhegood,well-intentionedcompanies.Ontheonehand,puttingchildcarefacilitiesintheworkplaceiswonderfulandenlightened.
Ontheotherhand,it’sanightmare--itjustmeansyouspendmoretimeatthebloodyoffice.Wehavetoberesponsibleforsettingandenforcingtheboundariesthatwewantinourlife.
Thethirdobservationiswehavetobecarefulwiththetimeframethatwechooseuponwhichtojudgeourbalance.BeforeIwentbacktoworkaftermyyearathome,IsatdownandIwroteoutadetailed,step-by-stepdescriptionoftheidealbalanceddaythatIaspiredto.Anditwentlikethis:
wakeupwellrestedafteragoodnight’ssleep.Havesex.Walkthedog.Havebreakfastwithmywifeandchildren.Havesexagain.
Drivethekidstoschoolonthewaytotheoffice.Dothreehours’work.Playasportwithafriendatlunchtime.Doanotherthreehours’work.Meetsomematesinthepubforanearlyeveningdrink.Drivehomefordinnerwithmywifeandkids.Meditateforhalfanhour.Havesex.Walkthedog.Havesexagain.Gotobed.
HowoftendoyouthinkIhavethatday?
(Laughter)Weneedtoberealistic.Youcan’tdoitallinoneday.Weneedtoelongatethetimeframeuponwhichwejudgethebalanceinourlife,butweneedtoelongateitwithoutfallingintothetrapofthe“I’llhavealifewhenIretire,whenmykidshavelefthome,whenmywifehasdivorcedme,myhealthisfailing,I’vegotnomatesorinterestsleft.”Adayistooshort;“afterIretire”istoolong.There’sgottobeamiddleway.
Afourthobservation:
Weneedtoapproachbalanceinabalancedway.Afriendcametoseemelastyear--andshedoesn’tmindmetellingthisstory--afriendcametoseemelastyearandsaid,“Nigel,I’vereadyourbook.AndIrealizethatmylifeiscompletelyoutofbalance.It’stotallydominatedbywork.Iwork10hoursaday;Icommutetwohoursaday.Allofmyrelationshipshavefailed.There’snothinginmylifeapartfrommywork.SoI’vedecidedtogetagripandsortitout.SoIjoinedagym.”
NowIdon’tmeantomock,butbeingafit10-hour-a-dayofficeratisn’tmorebalanced;it’smorefit.(Laughter)Lovelythoughphysicalexercisemaybe,thereareotherpartstolife--there’stheintellectualside;there’stheemotionalside;there’sthespiritualside.Andtobebalanced,Ibelievewehavetoattendtoallofthoseareas--notjustdo50stomachcrunches.
Nowthatcanbedaunting.Becausepeoplesay,“Bloodyhellmate,Ihaven’tgottimetogetfit.Youwantmetogotochurchandcallmymother.”AndIunderstand.Itrulyunderstandhowthatcanbedaunting.Butanincidentthathappenedacoupleofyearsagogavemeanewperspective.
Mywife,whoissomewhereintheaudiencetoday,calledmeupattheofficeandsaid,“Nigel,youneedtopickouryoungestson”--Harry--“upfromschool.”Becauseshehadtobesomewhereelsewiththeotherthreechildrenforthatevening.SoIleftworkanhourearlythatafternoonandpickedHarryupattheschoolgates.Wewalkeddowntothelocalpark,messedaroundontheswings,playedsomesillygames.Ithenwalkedhimupthehilltothelocalcafe,andwesharedapizzafortwo,thenwalkeddownthehilltoourhome,andIgavehimhisbathandputhiminhisBatmanpajamas.IthenreadhimachapterofRoaldDahl’s“JamesandtheGiantPeach.”
Ithenputhimtobed,tuckedhimin,gavehimakissonhisforeheadandsaid,“Goodnight,mate,”andwalkedoutofhisbedroom.AsIwaswalkingoutofhisbedroom,hesaid,“Dad?
”Iwent,“Yes,mate?
”Hewent,“Dad,thishasbeenthebestdayofmylife,ever.”Ihadn’tdoneanything,hadn’ttakenhimtoDisneyWorldorboughthimaPlaystation.
Nowmypointisthesmallthingsmatter.Beingmorebalanceddoesn’tmeandramaticupheavalinyourlife.Withthesmallestinvestmentintherightplaces,youcanradicallytransformthequalityofyourrelationshipsandthequalityofyourlife.Moreover,Ithink,itcantransformsociety.
Becauseifenoughpeopledoit,wecanchangesociety’sdefinitionofsuccessawayfromthemoronicallysimplisticnotionthatthepersonwiththemostmoneywhenhedieswins,toamorethoughtfulandbalanceddefinitionofwhatalifewelllivedlookslike.Andthat,Ithink,isanideaworthspreading.
